Mycelium is a material-research project turning food and agricultural waste into sound-absorbing panels. After months of experimentation we developed a bio-material recipe — bread waste, agricultural waste, spawn and mycelium — that grows into a resistant, versatile acoustic surface.
The Problem
Conventional acoustic panels rely on synthetic foams and mineral fibres with a heavy environmental footprint, while huge volumes of bread and agricultural waste go unused every day.
My Approach
Through iterative lab testing I refined a moldable formula (50% bread powder, 50% agricultural waste, spawn and water) grown in a mold to form textured, wave-patterned tiles. The panels hang from simple wooden rails so they can be arranged as flexible, modular acoustic screens.
The Outcome
A compostable, waste-derived material that performs acoustically and looks intentional — panels that bring warmth and quiet to interiors while closing a waste loop.
